Democrats could be closer to taking over the Kentucky Senate

Democrat Jodie Haydon raised more than twice as much as his Republican opponent for his Kentucky Senate race in District 14. Documents filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance show Haydon took in $64,855 while Republican Jimmy Higdon raised $31,655.
The two are running in a special election to replace former Senator Dan Kelly who resigned when Governor Steve Beshear (D) appointed him as a circuit judge.
The election is set for December 08, 2009.
The race is considered key in a push by Beshear to sway the Senate’s balance of power to improve his odds for passing a bill to expand gambling in Kentucky.
A Democratic majority in the Kentucky Senate could also mean a school bullying bill would be passed, in addition to a statewide equality law prohibiting discrimination in employment, housing, and credit for Kentucky’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Both measures have passed the Democratic controlled House of Representatives in the past, but died in the Republican controlled Senate.
Until the politicians who take our community for granted realize that they can no longer count on our votes unless we can count on theirs, things will never change for Kentucky’s LGBTI community.
