Radio Shack Corporation rating in a Kentucky discrimination case disagrees with HRC’s Buying Guide

Kentucky Equality Federation’s Discrimination, Hate Crimes, and School Bullying Committee released a letter commending Radio Shack Corporation for its response to a discrimination case. Kentucky Equality Federation gave Radio Shack Corporation an A+ rating for their handling of a specific discrimination case that went all the way to their corporate offices after Kentucky Equality Federation threatened a statewide boycott and protests. Louisville’s Fairness Campaign has recently had similar successes, but doesn’t publish ratings of the company’s response.
Over the years, Kentucky Equality Federation has displayed impressive mobilization skills when holding boycott’s and protests, most notably at the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion, Kentucky Capitol, Northern Kentucky University, Kentucky State University, and the University of the Cumberlands.
According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) 2010 Buying Guide however, Radio Shack Corporation scored near the bottom of the list along with Wal-Mart, Office Depot, and Meijer.
Kroger, Thornton’s and others however scored high above Wal-Mart, Radio Shack and others despite Kroger and Thornton’s being major corporate sponsors of the American Family Association of Kentucky, an anti-gay organization based in Louisville, KY. (source)
Apparently corporate spending to anti-gay causes isn’t a factor in the Human Rights Campaign’s Buying Guide(s), and not every corporation with LGBTI non-discrimination policies participate in HRC’s buying guide.
Major Fortune 500 Companies such as Publix Super Markets, Winn-Dixie, National City Bank, Dun & Bradstreet, Dow Jones, Blockbuster, MySpace.com, Regal Cinemas, Wendy’s, and Marathon (which also owns Speedway and SuperAmerica) refuse to cooperate. Other companies such a Big Lots, Dillard’s, Dollar General, Kohl’s, Tupperware, Lowe’s, Western Union, and Lowe’s also refuse cooperation with HRC’s Buying Guides in protest of the manner companies are graded.
