Lexington Art League highlights Lexington’s diversity by exploring identity and transformation

With the World Equestrian Games coming to Lexington in September, the Lexington Art League has planned events to highlight the diverse culture Lexington has to offer people around the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world. According to the Lexington Art League, Passing: Fashioning Drag and Alternate Selves uses visual art to explore identity, investigate transformation and celebrate the courage required for individuality.



Conservative Maryland Representative wants Attorney General impeached over gay marriage ruling

Don H. Dwyer Jr., a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates, plans to bring impeachment charges on the House floor on Wednesday against the Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler. Mr. Dwyer said that Mr. Gansler overstepped his authority in issuing a legal opinion last month saying the state would recognize same-sex marriages from other places and ordering state agencies to give gay married couples the same rights as heterosexual couples.



Kingdom of the Netherlands fury over U.S. general’s saying gays are responsible for massacre

A retired American general has apologized for a remark to the U.S. Senate suggesting that gay Dutch soldiers were partly to blame for the Srebrenica massacre by Serb soldiers in Bosnia, according to the Kingdom of the Netherlands Defense Ministry. The Netherlands Defense Ministry released an e-mail Tuesday from Sheehan, a former NATO commander who retired from the military in 1997, to retired Dutch General Henk van den Breemen saying he is sorry for his statements to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on March 18, 2010.



Protest, counterprotest surround McCain’s speech on gay rights

Meghan McCain voiced her support for marriage equality in a speech at the Jack Morton Auditorium Thursday night, calling the gay rights movement “this generation’s civil rights movement” and urging like-minded “progressive Republicans” to start speaking out. U.S. Senator John McCain drew fire from his Republican colleagues when he twice voted against proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.



Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives draws fire from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation

The movie Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, is drawing the wrath of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). “When a group of transgender women are violently beaten and left for dead, the violated vixens turn deadly divas,” the description says, then adds, “this revenge fantasy proves that it takes more than balls to get even.”



Pentagon eyes more ‘humane’ enforcement of gay ban

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to address ways to allow more “humane enforcement and application” of a policy that has seen thousands of homosexuals forced out of the military, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. “I think he is prepared to offer a way ahead on that subject this week. So stay tuned,” said Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell.



Kentucky House of Representatives Adopts Christian Principals

The separation of church and state are even more blurred in Kentucky thanks to a resolution passed by the House of Representatives. The Kentucky House of Representative passed an anti-gay right-wing resolution. The House passed Resolution 232, the Manhattan Declaration, with a 45 member vote; 55 members of the House didn’t vote, mostly Democrats.

In a proposed commonwealth budget that allocates over $3.4 billion for road projects, a small request of $3.5 million to fund the Kentucky AIDS Drug Assistance Program (KADAP) has been ignored, leaving hundreds living with HIV/AIDS facing difficult choices. The nearly 1300 patients enrolled in KADAP, which is currently unfunded, receive medications through a hodge-podge of resources that are temporary and unsustainable. In the meantime, Kentucky has the longest waiting list in the nation for drug assistance—numbering over 160 men and women—with more being added every day.

U.S. Supreme Court to rule on anti-gay protests at funerals; the end of the road for the Westboro Baptist Church?

In a shocking move, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to rule on whether constitutional free-speech rights protected anti-gay protests by members of a Kansas church at funerals for U.S. military members killed in Iraq. The group maintains that God hates homosexuals above all other kinds of “sinners” and that homosexuality should be a capital crime.
