Mexico Supreme Court to rule on gay adoption; the court upheld gay marriage

Felipe Calderon, president of the United Mexican States and his opposition to legalize gay marriage and calling it “unconstitutional” was overruled on Thursday, August 5, 2010 when Mexico’s Supreme Court sanctioned the landmark law. On Monday it will review the gay adoption clause. Washington, D.C. legalized gay marriage earlier this year after a District Superior Court rejected a citizens anti-gay marriage referendum.



Argentina legalizes gay marriage

The Argentine Republic on Thursday became the first nation in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, turning aside protests from the Roman Catholic Church to give gay couples the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts. It was not immediately clear if the provinces will accept the Federation’s legalization of same-sex marriage.



World outrage continues as gay couple sentenced to 14 years hard labor

The United Kingdom announced today that it will review its aid to Malawi if the Government refuses to free two gay men who were sentenced to 14 years’ hard labor this week. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza — who were sentenced to 14 years hard labor on Thursday for getting engaged in a traditional ceremony in December.



World’s largest gay rights organization cancels worldwide conference because of protests and violence

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Organization (“ILGA”), formerly known simply as “International Lesbian and Gay Organization” the world’s largest LGBTI organization, with nearly 700 member organizations in 110 counties across the world commented today about the cancellation of a worldwide conference due to threats, protests, and violence.



Kingdom of the Netherlands fury over U.S. general’s saying gays are responsible for massacre

A retired American general has apologized for a remark to the U.S. Senate suggesting that gay Dutch soldiers were partly to blame for the Srebrenica massacre by Serb soldiers in Bosnia, according to the Kingdom of the Netherlands Defense Ministry. The Netherlands Defense Ministry released an e-mail Tuesday from Sheehan, a former NATO commander who retired from the military in 1997, to retired Dutch General Henk van den Breemen saying he is sorry for his statements to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on March 18, 2010.



Republic of Uganda may Withdraw Anit-Gay Legislation because of International Pressure

The law was proposed in Uganda’s Parliament following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy for gays to become heterosexual. However, at least one of those leaders has denounced the bill, as have some other conservative and liberal Christians in the United States.



U.S. Ends HIV/AIDS Travel Ban

Republic of Uganda proposes law to executive homosexuals. The worldwide outrage continues. In a groundbreaking move, a representative of the Pope in the audience read a statement strongly condemning the criminalization of homosexual conduct. A powerful U.S. Representative urged the Republic of Ugandan to ‘come to their senses’ and reject a controversial proposed law that would punish homosexuality with life in prison, without the possibility of parole or pardon.



Nations largest gay newspapers close, including the Wasington Blade

The nation’s oldest LGBTI newspaper, the Washington Blade closed today after having just turned 40 years old. The Washington Blade, owned by Window Media, the nation’s largest owner of gay newspapers, also closed the South Florida Blade, Southern Voice, Houston Voice, David Atlanta Magazine, bitchsession.com, Genre Magazine, and the 411 Magazine. Employees arrived at work this morning at all of the newspapers locations to find the doors locked and a sign posted on the front door.
