Kentucky Equality Federation joins Red States in “Friend of the Court” brief to the U.S. Supreme Court

Statewide organizations whose citizens vote Republican (or red) in presidential and Congressional elections made a push today for marriage equality by filing an amicus brief which the United States Supreme Court which is currently scheduled to hold hearings on, and rule on the U.S. Defense of Marriage Act which prevents federal recognition of gay marriages on a federal level as well as California Proposition 8. Kentucky Equality Federation is representing the citizens of the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Kentucky’s U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) today stated that he supports efforts in the commonwealth of Kentucky to legalize industrial hemp. Gatewood Galbraith Medical Marijuana Bill is also backed by Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, Kentucky’s Junior U.S. Senator Rand Paul, the Kentucky Senate Majority Caucus Chair, Senator Dan Seum, and the Senate Majority Floor Leader, Senator Damon Thayer.



Federation threatens Kentucky School District; orders cease and desist

The civil rights group Kentucky Equality Federation warned another school district today about calling student out of class to give them bibles. From the Office of the President, Kentucky Equality Federation’s Vice President of Legal, Jillian Hall, Esq., blasted the Logan County Board of Education. Kentucky Equality Federation did not provide the legal documents served by the attorneys representing Logan County, but Kentucky Equality Federation lead attorney Jillian Hall blasted an apparent rebuttal from the school’s legal representation. Hall stated court opinions mentioned did not apply to the commonwealth of Kentucky and additionally violated Section 5 of the state Constitution.

Gay rights organizations in Kentucky can breathe a sigh of relief as Senate President David L. Williams (R) leaves office, months after Williams announced that he and his wife are divorcing. Williams was expected to be opposed as President of the Senate during the 2013 legislative session. Some have described this as one of the biggest shakeups in Kentucky government since John “Eck” Rose (D) left office as President Pro Tempore for more than a decade and then president of the Kentucky Senate after Kentucky’s constitutional amendment ousting the Lt. Governor as the Senate President.

Kentucky Equality Federation President Jordan Palmer made the rounds with local and national news today, often speaking with one of their attorneys, Jill Hall Rose, founder and president of the Rose Law Offices who has represented Kentucky Equality Federation for over a decade. Federation President Jordan Palmer and Attorney Jill Hall Rose maintain the ruling is not a setback to the federal hate crimes legislation. “Though I find the jury’s reasoning questionable given the anti-gay testimony in regards to the hate crime, this is our judicial system and we must live with the verdict,” Palmer told MSNBC, and state and local media.



Gay inmate has nose partially bitten off; Kentucky Equality Federation calls it a hate crime

Kentucky Equality Federation reported another hate crime today at a county jail. The incident was reported to Kentucky Equality Federation’s Discrimination, Hate Crimes, and School Bullying Committee. Kentucky Equality Federation officials say they have tried to reach an agreement with the Warren County Jailer without success. Kentucky Equality Federation officials and their attorneys say the jail is responsible for medical expenses and reconstructive surgery for a gay inmate arrest on a technicality.

April 12, 2012 will forever be a day to remember in the history of the gay and lesbian community especially for Kentuckians. The push however to get the case to a federal level came from Kentucky Equality Federation, and advocacy and public advocate non-profit. Two Eastern Kentucky men are the first in the nation to be charged under the section of the federal hate-crimes law that makes it illegal to attack people based on their sexual orientation, said U.S. Attorney Kerry B. Harvey.
