The 2012 elections are behind us, and the various gains for the advocates of equality can not be denied. A shift is occurring it would seem, from the previous streak of marriage equality in the states being struck down to a new wave of states embracing equality for it’s citizens. President Obama’s stance on Marriage equality has been labeled as having “evolved” from his previous position of being against marriage equality itself to one of luke warm support. Mitt Romney’s position was one of supporting a Constitutional ban on gay marriage, which is a stance of opposition against states’ rights and their 10th Amendment rights to enact laws willed by the people.

Gay rights organizations in Kentucky can breathe a sigh of relief as Senate President David L. Williams (R) leaves office, months after Williams announced that he and his wife are divorcing. Williams was expected to be opposed as President of the Senate during the 2013 legislative session. Some have described this as one of the biggest shakeups in Kentucky government since John “Eck” Rose (D) left office as President Pro Tempore for more than a decade and then president of the Kentucky Senate after Kentucky’s constitutional amendment ousting the Lt. Governor as the Senate President.

Republicans gain 10 new Governor’s Mansions, new seats in the Kentucky House, the Kentucky Senate, and take control of the U.S. House of Representatives. With such huge losses to conservatives, the gay military ban will remain in place, with no gay friendly legislation passing either the U.S. or Kentucky Houses or Senates.

According to various sources, the election on November 02, 2010 will be determined by independent voters. If Democratic candidates are counting on long-standing support from gay voters to help stave off big losses on November 2nd, they could be in for a surprise with gay candidates leaning toward the Green and Libertarian Parties.

This year you will find little to no prefiled legislation in Kentucky, a sign that Kentucky lawmakers are not ready to push any particular agenda. Incumbent lawmakers are not sure of the outcome of the November 02, 2010. For better or worse, both Kentucky and the nation are moving in different directions and this election will determine who will control both the Kentucky and the U.S. Senate.
